Top tips: How best to collect rail tickets

When planning a rail journey, choosing the right ticket collection method can save time, reduce hassle, and even support sustainability. Here’s a quick guide to the main options available, so you can decide what works best for your journey.

eTicket

The most environmentally friendly option, an eTicket is a digital version of your rail ticket—usually in the form of a QR code. You can access it via your booking confirmation or mobile app. Once downloaded to your smartphone, simply scan it at station turnstiles or show it to rail staff when requested. It’s quick, convenient, and paper-free.

Collect at Station (Ticket on Departure)

If you’ve selected Ticket on Departure (TOD) during booking, you’ll receive a ticket collection reference. On arrival at the station, head to a self-service kiosk and follow the on-screen instructions. You can collect your ticket from any station with a TOD machine, regardless of the station you selected during booking. For example, a ticket booked for collection at Derby can also be picked up at Leicester.

When entering your booking reference, make sure it matches your confirmation. If you’ve booked a return journey, remember to print both outbound and return tickets.

Print at Home

If you’ve chosen a print-at-home ticket, it will include a QR or barcode for scanning. The ticket details will be in your booking confirmation. Print your ticket on plain white paper and bring it with you, this option offers flexibility while still allowing for digital scanning.
