Staying safe in hotels and venues: Practical tips for travellers

Take a look at a few top tips on staying safe in hotels and venues while travelling for business.

Whether you're working in hospitality or simply staying at a hotel or attending a venue, safety and discretion are key to ensuring a secure and comfortable experience for everyone. Here are some essential tips to help maintain high standards of safety and professionalism across key areas of hotel and venue operations.

Housekeeping

  • Secure bedroom doors: Doors should never be left open while cleaning corridors, regardless of whether the room is a departure or a stay.
  • Lost key protocol: If a guest reports a lost key or key card, direct them to reception for a replacement following security clearance, unless the housekeeper has a handheld device and can verify identity securely.
  • Interconnecting doors: Always check that interconnecting doors are locked during every clean, whether the room is occupied or not.

Reception and Check-In

  • Room number discretion: Never announce room numbers aloud—point to them discreetly on the key card.
  • Key card presentation: Always hand over key cards face down.
  • Secure documents: Credit card dockets and receipts should never be left in public view.
  • Key management: Physical keys must be securely locked away when not in use.
  • Replacement key protocol: Guests requesting replacement keys or cards must present valid ID.

Credit/Debit Card Safety

  • Card handling: Never allow your card to be taken out of sight for payment. Staff should bring a handheld device to you or direct you to a secure payment terminal.

Telephone Calls

  • Call verification: When connecting calls to guest rooms, always ask for the guest’s name before transferring.
  • No market research calls: Calls from market research contacts must not be connected to guest rooms under any circumstances.
