Sustainability- Travelling responsibly

Do you follow the requests on those cards in your hotel bathroom and reuse your towels and linen?

Industry trade show World Travel Market has found some hotels are getting more creative in the ways they find to reduce their laundry load and help out the environment.

Swiss and Austrian ski resorts last year discovered that replacing the usual ‘save the planet’ request for towel reuse with a message saying three-quarters of guests in that particular room had reused their towels proved significantly more effective. Psychologists put this down to a wish for group acceptance.

Radisson Blu has been giving guests an extra feel-good incentive. For every 250 towels they reuse, the hotel chain is donating enough money to the charity Just a Drop to provide clean water for a child for life. Bathroom cards show the running total the chain hopes it will benefit 12,000 children a year.

Starwood Hotels has meanwhile been giving $5 food and drink vouchers or 500 Starwood points to guests for each day they decline housekeeping services.

Other hotels have innovated in the way they reuse laundry that has come to the end of its life. Marriot has partnered with UK social enterprise Sleeping Bags to turn bed linen into other items for guest rooms like bathrobes, tote bags and slippers.

Conversely, taking a sustainable approach to creating new sheets, W Hotels in North America, in a partnership with and Coca Cola, recently introduced the Ekocycle range of bed linen made from recycled plastic bottles.
