Amalfi Coast - Casa Angelina

When it comes to accommodation on the Amalfi Coast, it’s fair to say that most of the upmarket properties come firmly under the Grand Dame category, with many of them former summer palaces of the moneyed and noble.

There’s no doubting the luxury they offer, but if you want something a lot cooler and way more contemporary, there is an alternative.

There’s nothing that says old money in the way Casa Angelina looks, in fact it’s positively minimalist, a cool white cube that clings to the cliff-side. The owners describe the décor as ‘whiter than white chic’ and it’s one that frames the azure of the Mediterranean and the Amalfi sky perfectly.

Casa Angelina is a Design Hotels member and with just 39 rooms and beach cottages, it also falls into the boutique camp. It wins yet more points for its location at Praiano, five miles (8 km) from Positano and six miles (10km) from Amalfi, making either an easy idyllic cruise along the coast.

Brand names abound throughout the hotel, with Philippe Starck lamps, Murano glass sculptures, Bang and Olufsen TVs and L’Occitane toiletries, but it is the setting and the floor-to-ceiling windows that will probably hold your attention.

Breakfast is served on the top floor terrace, while the Marrakech bar boasts white Gervasoni sofas, mood ceiling lighting and, perhaps best of all, its barman Massimo serves his signature Limoncello Mojito.

When it comes to facilities, the minimalism ends, as there’s a beach club (reached by yet another cool feature, a glass lift), outdoor pool with counter-current jets, indoor pool, solarium, sauna and Jacuzzi.

If you want privacy and the budget will stretch to it, there are four former fishermen’s cottages, known as Eaudesea, cut into the cliff wall with steps down to the beach. At 23-32sqm, they are ideal for honeymooners and, despite their rustic feel - some of the walls are bare rock - are packed with Casa Angelina’s latest gadgets.
